Chapter
2: Spilled
Secrets

Tummi
was not known for his grand ability to dissect situations or scenes
but
even he knew that the entire city was drowned in tension. Oh,
the others tried
to press past it but that was almost impossible
to do. You could almost cut
through the air.

Tummi felt
sorry for the others. He didn’t really take a side, Glen or
Barbic.
He saw his own clan’s points but he also could see the Barbics’
points
as well. He almost felt like they could help them through
this time best if
only someone, someone named Gruffi mainly, would
put his pride aside and let
them.

For some reason, Tummi
wasnt hungry which was not like him at all. He always
had
an appetite. Frowning, Tummi pushed his plate away and stood up;
maybe…well, maybe if
they could get Ursa to ease up some too,
somehow but he was no miracle
worker.

So he resolved to do it the same way he got Grammi to give
in.

Talk to the kid. Now, where would Buddi’s room be? This
was not going to be easy and he didnt know Ursalia like the
Barbics did. Tummi followed the sound and it led him to a room
at the far end of the hallway, the door open slightly ajar. He
knocked, slightly and gently.

The music stopped and he got a
soft, “Come in…”

Pushing his way in, he was met by
Buddi Barbic, sitting on his bed with his
flute in his hands. The
boy looked oddly relaxed and when he saw Tummi, set
his flute on
his bedside
table.

“Oh, hi Tummi…”

The round Gummi blushed
himself before walking in slowly, looking around.
Barbic rooms
sure were different than Glen rooms, kinda anyway.

Buddi had
toys, which kind of surprised Tummi, but they were all geared
toward
nature or made of something from nature. Tummi even noted a
ragged
stuffed wolf on the boy’s bed by his pillow.

But
all in all, it looked like a blend of Cubbi’s room with Sunni’s…not
so
different he supposed, but upon second
thought maybe not.

Your
room looks interesting, Buddi, Tummi said, eyeing the nature
themed items scattered everywhere. It was so different from his model
boats that used to line the walls back of his own room at the Glen,
which was now deserted and destroyed.

Buddi
smiled, if a bit shyly. “Did you need something?” he
inquired, being no
fool to bears trying to beat around the bush.
Barbics typically were straight
out, said what they thought but
he’d been around Glens long enough to know
they worked
differently.

A bit nervous himself, Tummi sat down on the
cub’s bed, eyeing the boy. “I
wanted to talk about Ursa,
if ya don’t mind that is…”

Buddi was instantly
defensive but stayed calm and polite as he retorted, “You
know,
Gruffi’s half of the problem.”

Tummi
thought Buddi could use the company coming in here to talk. After
all, both clans pretty much had something in common nowpain. But
did Buddi even want to talk about Ursa, though? Tummi wondered.

Tummi
rubbed the back of his head nervously, “I didn’t say Gruffi
wasn’t a
problem though Buddi…”

Buddi seemed to calm
at that. Tummi noted a deep sense of loyalty among the
Barbics;
they were certain a rough and tumble bunch but there existed
among
them a unity that he envied his own clan for.

“well,
whatta ya wanna talk about?”

“Well…uh…I was
wonderin’ that is” Tummi swallowed and ultimately decided
not
to address Ursa right now but rather

“Does it ever go
away Buddi?”

“Does what?”

“You
know…the”

“Does the pain of losing your home ever
go away?”

“Well…uh, I guess…yeah…”

“No.
Never.” On this, Buddi was adamant but he smiled at the large
Glen
Gummi. “But I think yer real lucky. Lucky?”
“Yeah…” At this, Buddi turned
very solemn. “All
your family got away.”

Tummi sat up straight suddenly,
stunned, “but…I thought all yers did too!
Weren’t you
Barbics always just this 20 or so?”

“23.” Buddi
corrected. “And no…the night the woods fell there were 30
of
us.”

Tummi stared “7…”

Buddi
nodded “Including Gritti’s father. Why do you think he despises
humans
so much? And Grubbi’s cousins. And old mentors. One of our
old historians…”
Buddi shook his head “None my age
though…I’ve been our last cub since I was
born…but, like I
said…you’re real lucky.

Tummi
never thought about it that way. There used to be hundreds of us
back at the Tummi couldnt finish. It was too painful to
think about the home he just lost.

Buddi
didn’t comment on it, just nodded.
Tummi met the younger gummi’s
eyes a moment. “So… how long were you all in
Barbic
Woods?”

Buddi
took a deep breath, “Ursa’s third great grandmother founded it.
She
started it all…so four generation. About 450 years or so.”

“That
long?” Tummi had thought otherwise but it seemed the Barbics
really did
know
what they were going through.

Buddi
chuckled, “Yeah…that long.” Buddi met Tummi’s face and
suddenly
smiled, standing up, “you what does help, Tummi?”

“What?”

“Talking
about it.”

“You
Barbics talk?”

Buddi
looked slightly insulted. “Course we do!”

“Sorry,
I just thought that”

“We
just don’t talk much to you guys…” Buddi answered his
unspoken
question. “Talking about home is a clan only thing.”

This
conversation was not what Tummi had in mind. He came to talk about
Ursa but he got something out of it in the process: the story of
Barbic Woods. Maybe Buddi shouldnt have told him about it if it
was a clan only thing? But, perhaps he could relay a little of their
history to Buddi? Both of these questions tugged at the back of the
big bears mind.

Boy, this kid is an easier nut ta crack than Ursa.
She never woulda told us their clans roots, Tummi
thought.

Buddi
honestly didn’t know why he was suddenly spilling all sorts of
Barbic
secrets to this Glen. It wasn’t usually permitted but some
reason…he wasn’t
sure what, told him this was right.

He
eyed Tummi, unsure of what else to do.

You
know, Tummi, maybe I shouldnt have told you about our history.
Ursall have my hide if she finds out that I told you about our
history. Buddi said.

Tummi
could tell Buddi looked a little worried.
If Tummi brought up his original topic of discussion, it would only
further the cubs fretting so it might be better not to bring it up
at all.

Should
he just leave? Could he talk about his home with Buddi? It wouldnt
hurt, would it?
