Chapter 6: Dreams

Julie was running, everything around her was twisted and dark. She screamed loudly when she felt tugs at the bottom of her night dress and shapes forming in the darkness of the wood. She didnt have a clue why she was running, but she ran. She glanced behind her and saw torches, its illuminating light flashing right through her making patterns on the tree and anything in front of her.

She kept a tight hold on her dress as she hiked it up so it would be easier to run. She occasionally had to let go so she could push the random branches out of her way. Her hand immediately going back to its place on her dress.

Soon the world around her faded into nothing but dull, bleak whiteness. Their was no dark, their was nothing but white. Everything was blank, like a blank canvas that she loved to paint on. Soon, though, it was daytime and she wasnt in the woods anymore. She was inside a grey brick castle. In some room, she still had no idea where she was, and for some reason, it didnt bother her in the bit. She heard crying, and her attention went to the crib in the center of the room. The crib was white and pink.

Julie carefully approached it, inside she saw a small baby wrapped in a pink blanket. She guessed it must have been a girl. When she reached out to calm the baby, she didnt seem to realize, or partially care, that she didnt have see through skin, no. It was a normal peach color. Just as her hands were mere inches, the baby stopped crying, and it opened its eyes.

The babys eyes were brown. A light hazel color. They were also slanted, in a similar way as her own. When she saw a black small tuff on the babys head, something inside her told her that, the baby was her. As a kid.

Soon, the world disappeared again, and she was sitting on a log in front of a river. It was dark, and the moon and stars were out. No clouds were in the sky. Julie looked down at the river and noticed a small silver heart shaped pendent. She got off the log and reached towards it and fished it out. It was a necklace. A beautiful one at that. She gasped in slight terror when she heard a light growl. Looking up, it was a wolf. But not any wolf.

It was the same wolf from her painting. The same wolf that had been terrorizing her dreams. But this time, its hair was greyer. A strange contrast from when she first saw it, and it had stunning black fur. Its deep brown eyes stared angrily at her. It always stared at her that way. But this time, this time, it had a tired look in its eyes. Soon, a snapping sound was heard and both Julie and the wolf looked to see what it was.

Again, the world faded white around Julie before she could realize what it was. Suddenly, the whole world turned black. Nothing could be seen or heard. A light lit up in the distance, and their was a black rose. THE rose. Soon, before her eyes, it wilted, as if time and space around it was speeding up. When the last petal was about to fall, a loud scream was the last thing Julie heard before she saw flashes of images. That was when she woke up in a dry sweat.

She quickly got out of bed and placed her robe on. She didnt need to see where she was going, shes knew where everything was in her room. She groped around for the handle and jerked the door open. She stalked quickly down the hallways towards her art gallery where she painted.

Once she flew inside, she picked up a blank canvas, placed it on the easel, and grabbed her paint and paint brushes. Grabbing her most favorite and trusted brush from the cup it was placed in, she started painting out scenes from her dream. Like she had been for the past three years since the castle was cursed.

Gwen moaned as she opened her eyes. It was bright. Could it be morning already. Using some will, she opened her eyes and propped herself up with her elbows into a some-what partial sitting position. She wasnt in her room anymore. And she really didnt seem to care.

She was in a field of flowers and grassy plains. She stood up and around. Turning behind her, she saw a forest. It looked dark and ominous. A far away cry from the plain she was standing in. It was weird that both places were next to each other. The red haired girl noticed something huddled and shivering just at the edge of the forest.

Something called her to it. Some weird instinct told her to go towards it, to try and find out what it was. She moved closer and noticed it was nothing but a little black-haired boy. She bent down in front of him, still in the field. She placed a hand gently on the kids shoulders. He looked about the age of 9 or younger.

The boy looked up, it was when she noticed his deep brown eyes. His face was tear streaked, and he was still curled up in a pathetic ball form. Gwen felt her motherly instincts kicking in.

Where are your parents sweetie? Gwen asked. The boy gave a small shrug.

Theyre not here, the boy sniffed, They died Gwens frowned deepened. No wonder this little boy was sad. His parents were dead, Gwen would be crying too if her parents were dead.

Do you have any relatives? Gwen questioned. The boy shrugged.

Not really, but I have a little sister, He answered. This wasnt good at all, the little boy had an even younger sister somewhere.

How can I help you? Gwen asked whole heartedly. The boys face darkened.

You cant, Im already doomed, The boy replied darkly. Before Gwen could ask, she felt a shock run through the hand that was placed on the boys shoulder. She yelped and fell on her but. Soon the skies turned red, and a strong wind blew through her long sun kissed hair. The boy suddenly grew and grew until he looked the same age around her. The boy, now turned man, looked towards her. The only thing Gwen could tell is that the look in his eyes screamed for help. The man screamed as bounds soon shot up out of the Earth and pulled him down.

NO! Gwen screeched reaching the mans open hand and tried, in vain, to pull him up. Before his whole body was pulled down into the ground, the man looked back up at Gwen.

Help me, He mumbled quietly before his whole body disappeared. Gwen screamed and hollered as she hit the floor with her fists. The sky still red and ominous. Soon, black rose petals rained down from the sky. Gwen didnt seem to care, she just stared at the ground where the man was. She heard a soft sympathetic purring sound, looking up, she saw it was a tiger. Gwen stared at the tigers pools of green eyes. The tiger gave a loud roar and Gwen yelped as she woke up in a start and fell out of her bed.

Gwen moaned and sat up, grumbling as she rubbed her head.

In Bens dream, everything was dandy. It was a sunny day at the castle, and it was restored to its beauty to the way it looked in the painting Julie made. Speaking of Julie, she was also in Bens dream. She was curled up next to him, restored to normal with peach skin and long black hair wearing her signature pink and white dress.

Of course, in this dream, Gwen and Kevin were actually being civilized to each other. Kevin, still in his monstrous form, was somewhere else in the castle. Doing whatever, Ben didnt really give a hoot. Gwen was on the other side of the library, and as usual, absorbed in an interesting novel.

Ben looked out the window, and outside, he saw three wolves and a tiger. The tiger looked proud and green eyed. The second had graying hair, with lively deep brown eyes. Another was a black haired wolf with sad hazel eyes. The last one had dark brown hair and light olive eyes. The tiger and grey wolf looked at each other and quickly scampered off. The black haired wolf stared into Bens eyes for a little before she looked over towards the brown haired wolf and they both left as well.

Ben? A groggy voice asked. Ben looked down and smiled when he found it was Julie. She smiled back and snuggled closer to him.

Ben wake up, Julie mused looking up at him and wrapping her arms around his neck. He looked down at her in confusion.

What? He asked. Soon Julies voice changed into a slightly deeper voice, the voice of her cousin.

Wake up! The voice shouted. Ben moaned and opened his eyes. Gwen stood frustrated at him as she continued to shake him to try and get him up. Get up! Its time for breakfast! Ben groaned and tried slapping her hands away. He didnt exactly remember what his dream was about, but he knew it was a good one.

That was a weird dream, Kevin thought to himself as he sat against the head board of his black satin bed. He couldnt remember much. But he remembered a dark forest and a plain of flowers? Yeah, it was flowers. He remembered Gwen, he also remembered being small and sad about something. Soon, a little after dream Gwen came up to him his dream turned red.

He didnt really remember much else after that. Just lots of pain and anger. Frustration defiantly, then the last if not least, sadness. The last thing he remembered before waking up, was asking for help.

And to him, that was never a good sign. Nope. Not at all. Kevin didnt have nightmares often. And when he did, it was never a good sign. They were like his warning signals for something bad going on in the future. And this wasnt a good sign, not at all.

Breakfast was quiet. This time, it only consisted of Gwen, Ben, and Kevin. Julie was no where to be found.

So, do you think Julies painting? Gwen asked. Ben shrugged.

I dont really know, Ben answered truthfully, But I think thats where she is. Kevin looked over towards them while taking a giant slurp of his oatmeal.

You know bout the painting room? Kevin asked. Both cousins nodded. Kevin rolled his eyes. Im surprised you dont know about the passageways yet, he muttered darkly.

Passageways? Both cousins asked in unison. Kevin just kept quiet, the only sounds that filled the room was his slurping sounds from Kevin. The prince pointedly ignored both Gwens and Bens questions about the passageways when suddenly the doors opened. It was Julie, who had her hair in a messy pony tail and paint on her face. She smiled a little and sat down next to Ben. She yawned a little as a few servants came up and placed a plate of bread in front of her. Julie thanked them as they scurried their way back to the kitchen.

Sorry Im late for breakfast, Julie apologized, Ive been up since about dawn trying to work on my new painting.

Another dream? Kevins question sounded more like a dry statement. He already knew about where her inspiration for her paintings and drawings came from. Julie nodded as she took a few bites of her bread.

Couldnt stop until I was finished with most of it, Julie remarked nonchalantly, I still have a bit more work to do before I can consider it done.

What are you guys talking about? Ben questioned. Kevin glared at him, Ben just glared back. Neither were really on good terms still. But they were on a better term then Kevin and Ben. Julie didnt really seem to notice or care, besides, they werent going to go in an all out fight.

Well, most of the drawings and paintings you saw last nights were images of a dream I had, Julie explained taking a sip of her orange juice.

So the wolf was in a dream you had? Gwen asked. Julie nodded after finishing her toast, she stood up from her seat.

Well, Ive got to go, I want to finish that painting by lunch, Julie excused herself as she left the room.

And the dinning room was back in its uncomfortable silence, but then Gwen and Kevin got into an argument causing Ben to sigh and leave.

Julies tongue was slightly peaking out of her mouth and pressed tightly against her upper lip as she focused on her painting and every stroke she made. Ben smiled as he stood leaning against the door studying her every movement and brush of her stroke. Also her little habits like, occasionally shed blow a lock of her bangs out of her hair as she was to focused on her painting to move her other hand and move it out of the way. Julie-watching was a fun activity for Ben.

Especially since she didnt even realize he was in the room just yet.

He lightly closed the door behind him. It made a soft thud causing Julie to snap up and whirl around.

Ben! She exclaimed hand clutching the area of the dress where her heart was, You scared the heck out of me!

Sorry, Ben said apologetically, Didnt think I would since Ive been standing her for a little bit. Julie blushed a bit causing Ben to smile.

Oh, youve been watching me for that long? Julie asked embarrassed, suddenly she smiled, But the real question, why were you staring at me?

I-I-I-I- Ben spluttered. Julie laughed as Ben sputtered out some excuse that was intelligible.

Relax, Ben, Julie giggled, You wanna just talk while I paint for a bit? Ben, still not completely at ease leaned against the table near one of the many windows.

Yeah, Ben replied earnestly, Id like that.

Gwen sighed as she tried re-reading one of the books Julie had given her. After reading all twelve books, all she could do was re-read them. She moaned and turned over placing the book somewhere on her bed. Getting up she walked out the hall to see no one really there. Well, no one except Alexa and Kaylin playing cards several feet away.

Hey, Gwen called, both girls looked up in surprise. Kaylin quickly turned back towards her partner moving her hands rapidly moving in all directions. Alexa just rolled her eyes and started saying something to Kaylin.

WHAT?! Gwen heard Kaylin shout, Dont-

Hi! Alexa shouted back dropping her cards on the floor, Kaylin just sighed and dropped her cards on the floor as well. Soon the purple and black stripped girl rushed up towards Gwen. Youre Bens cousin, right?

You know my cousin? Gwen asked. Both girls nodded.

Yeah, Kaylin answered, we were introduced by Julie on your first night here with your cousin!

So, do you need anything, um- Alexa stumbled over her words, not really sure about the womans name.

Gwendolyn, but you could call me Gwen, Gwen filled in. Alexa nodded and gave a small appreciative smile.

So, do you need anything Gwen?

Um, yeah, is there anything to really do here? She asked. Both girls shrugged their shoulders.

Not really, but we find ways to keep ourselves busy, Kaylin said, If you look there are lots of things to do.

Yeah, like look at the art galleries, Alexa said.

Or look at the gardens out back, Kaylin added.

Or talk to other servants around the castle, Alexa suggested. Gwen smiled at their enthusiasm.

Do you guys mind showing me around? That so called master of yours didnt really give me such a great tour. Once again the girls looked at each other then back at Gwen.

I think we should go, we have work to do Kaylin remarked. Yeah! Of course we dont mind! Alexa chimed. Both girls said it simultaneously. Kaylin elbowed the lizard like girl in the ribs.

Ow, Alexa cried rubbing her side. Come on! Alexa whispered, Just a quick tour! What could happen? Kaylin sighed.

Okay, lets go. Alexa cheered a bit as she and Kaylin lead Gwen down the hall. The red haired girl laughed quietly to herself. These two seemed nice.

Kevin grunted to himself as he walked down the stairs. But in his monstrous form, it sounded like he was stomping down the stairs. This past week had been the most excruciating week in the last three years. Not to mention the most annoying. Theyd only been here a week and it seemed like things have changed.

The cooks were starting to make elaborate meals again. The maids starting humming quiet songs, something the havent done in a long time. And the rest of the servants just seemed to be moving with a purpose now. Hope was filled back in the castle. For what reason? Hell never no. He doesnt have to be a psychic to know hell never get together with Gwen. She was too annoying and loud. She was also too pretty. No one that pretty or even plain would want love him.

He sighed as he reached the gardens. He walked down the paths and took secret and barely noticeable paths that eventually lead him to the rose gardens. As the name implied, roses dotted bushes that surrounded the place. No one but him knew about it. Well, maybe Julie knew, but she never told Kevin about knowing about it.

Kevin liked coming her to think, and it seemed hed been coming here a lot in the past three years. Even more so with the Tennysons arrival. His bulky body moved towards a certain rose. It was a bright yellow one. The only yellow one in the gardens that had yet to bloom. Kevin liked this flower, it was a complete opposite of the black flower in his room. It filled him with hope.. Maybe, maybe if everything really did have a happy ending. Maybe that rose was a sign that their were happy endings. Maybe Just maybe hed get his.
