You Promised
“You said you’d never leave me.”
Kevin’s eyes peered over the books and packed boxes in the blued painted bedroom, to Ben. He was asleep on the floor, eyes closed as his chest moved in a slow movement, breathing in and out. For days he ranted about he had been so excited about going to college, and how his past alien years wouldn’t bother him now that he didn’t have the omnitrix, and no boy or girl would question the strange watch.
His room was left with a few shelves and a small dresser than was once next to his mattress (which had been sold), while the other items wouldn’t fit in his new dorm room. Kevin hoped Ben didn’t fit in at all; he wanted him to stay with him, go live with him. Not worry about college, or working, or anything.
“Ben” Kevin breathed, moving around the boxes and kneeling down to the boy. He was hoping to get out before nightfall. “Wake up” He shook him agitatedly, although he didn’t awake; only turned onto his side. “Idiot.” Kevin remarked, chuckling as he shook him again.
He remembered a time thoughthe time when he made this official, this idea of staying with Ben. Having him move in with him, and stay with himnever leave his side.
—
Two Years Ago.
“Ben!” The sudden female voice came closer to the brunet as he laid on his side among the dirt and broken rocks. She was followed by Kevin, sliding down a large dirt hill to run to her cousin.
Gwen ran over as Kevin followed.
“Wake up!” She called, shaking him as she kneeled down.
He didn’t respond, just laid there. It was at least the second time he had fainted from transforming. The first was weeks ago, master control unlocked. His watch timed out. It did it again today, timed out. The red the same color as Albedo’s eyes.
“Help me Kevin!” She demanded, pulling him up by one arm, and Kevin pulling his other over his shoulder.
The two had effortlessly dragged the brunet to the car, Gwen helping him into the back seat, as well as sitting in the back with him. She didn’t want a thing to happen to her cousin, she would stay with him until she got home. An excuse had to be lied about into the morning. What really happened to Ben, why he didn’t come home, nor his parents didn’t heart from him. No, they wouldn’t like the idea of him staying at Kevin’s house for the night. He was Ben’s ruffian friend.
She figured his parents would have to deal with it; there was no way around it.
Kevin put the car into drive, and quickly turned out of the small sand lot he was stuck in. He was worried about Ben, this was the second time, and he didn’t want anything to happen to the boy. Who else would he get “advice from,” when he needed to know something about Gwenwho was he kidding, he never liked Gwen to begin with.
Kevin didn’t just worry about Ben’s state while he drove quickly above the speed limit to Gwen’s; he also worried about Ben’s sudden transformations going to one day break his stupid omnitrix. Ben didn’t care though. He had this thing about helping people who needed it, and saving the world.
“I’ll drop you off if you want.” Kevin’s voice came, trying to hide how he felt.
Gwen moved her hands, running over his forehead. He was rather warm as if coming down with a fever; the sudden pinkish tint must have been a sign. “I should stay and help him!”
“I can take care of him!” He became defensive.
“Leaving you and Ben alone is like leaving two male roasters in a fighting ring.”
“You don’t trust me with Ben?”
“NoI never said that.”
“But you’re thinking it.” He stopped the car at her house.
“Finebut I swear Kevin”
“I know!” He turned and glared at her. Gwen had this big speech about hunting Kevin down if he ever hurt Ben. And if did hurt Ben, Kevin would hope there was pleasure involved in it.
—-
It was almost three when he got back to his place (stopping at a store first, he wanted to make sure if Ben did have a fever, he could give him something).
Ben had awaken at one point, lying on the back seat with his hand over his forehead. He spoke softly at what was going on, and instead of the normal parking place, Kevin turned into the parking garage in the back of his building. When he set into park, he turned on his car light, and joined Ben in the back seat, getting him to sit up, although he suddenly became dizzy.
“Are you okay?” His voice was rather soft and caring.
He nodded, eyes lowering.
“Open your mouth.”
Ben looked at him, a small spoon that had medicine in it was in his left hand.
“Ben, open.”
He shook his head no.
“Benstop acting like a baby and open your damn mouth.”
He crossed his arms over his chest, cheeks puffing out. He shook his head again.
Kevin came closer, making Ben move back, his free right hand slithered around his waist, traveling under his shirt. It was a little too close for friends.
“What the hell Kev” He was cut off by the spoon being shoved into his mouth.
It made him cough as it went down his throat. It tasted disgusting, maybe the worse thing he had ever tasted. And his grandpa’s cooking was pretty bad.
“One more.” He held the spoon up again and Ben gave in, and it wasn’t because Kevin’s hand reached around to touch him. It felt fine. Natural even. Soft. He wasn’t sure why. He could even imagine the elder’s hands touching farther, touching everywhere.
“Swallow it.” Kevin said when Ben took the medicine in his mouth, pouting at the taste. It was still as disgusting the second time.
“Thank you.” He closed the cap and threw it up front on his seat.
“Whatever.”
“What happened?” Kevin watched as Ben brought his feet up. “You were fine one momentthen we knew you were hit and you justfainted”
He shrugged. Ben had nothing to say to what happened, he didn’t remember what happened. He was dizzy, everything just seemed too fuzzy and weirdand confusingHe wasn’t sure how anything happened from this moment on.
“Ben” He breathed, looking out the window into the darkness before turning back to the green eyes. “What are you going to do, after you don’t have the omnitrix anymore?” He clenched onto his jeans. “You won’t be able to fight anymore”
He shrugged. “I really want to go to collegeand do somethingYeah, I love fighting aliens but” He turned his eyes from the dark orbs he saw. “I want to go on and get married.”
“Oh yeah?” It perked Kevin’s interest.
“Julie and I were”
“Ben I love you!”
Kevin couldn’t believe he said that. He was just so sick of hearing that girl’s name. He couldn’t deal with it; he couldn’t listen to another story about those two. No matter what had happened.
Ben didn’t respond. He just blinked, moving his legs from his chest.
“Ben” He sighed.
“I heard you Kevin” He crossed his arms, rubbing his right one with his left hand as he looked down.
“And?”
“You waitedyou waited so long” Ben shook his head. “Since when?”
“I think when I first met youI felt something. I was young, but when I came back, and I saw you again. And I realized what I thought”
“So you waited?!” He turned to Kevin, irritated, and then he suddenly calmed down. “Julie and I talked the other nightshe told me she wasn’t sure if she could stay with me. We just began fighting over everything. Whether it where to go, who I could hang out with, how long she could stay at practice. She felt like because she was Asian, she had to be smart, and had to make decisions for both of us, had to be easy”
He sighed. He never really liked Julie.
“Can we go inside?”
Kevin looked up.
“It’s getting coldand I’m kind ofdizzy” He slightly wavered.
“Come here”
Ben tried moving, making him practically fall onto Kevin’s lap. He didn’t even move, just laid there as Kevin took it upon himself to pat the younger, hands flexing through his silky hair.
“Do you love me, Ben?”
Ben’s voice came in a whisper. He seemed so tired, so coldmaybe it was just the transformations affecting him again. “yes” His hands wrapped around Kevin’s waists.
“And you won’t leave?”
“NoI promise”
—–
“Hn?” A strange sound came from the brunet as he awoke with a yawn; arms stretching outward as he sleepily looked up at Kevin and waved lightly.
“We have to go, get your bag.”
It was all he said before he left angrily. He didn’t want Ben to leave; he just couldn’t watch it happen. He needed him to stay; he might really be all he had, besides his Mom.
—–
The cold breezes of air hit Ben when he walked outside without a coat. January would start his first semester of college; four days from now, that Monday after New Yearsit hadn’t even snowed. He hated this place.
He pushed his bag under his feet as he made his way into Kevin’s car, shivering. It wasn’t his fault his coat was trapped in his bag with his other materials, tooth brush, fresh clothes, money, ID, a few other things. He didn’t know it was going to bed so cold he could hardly see his breath.
He shivered in the car, turning to Kevin who had been ignoring him for the past three weeks. Ever since he found about the college. As if Ben was committing the biggest sin of them all and Kevin wasn’t apart of it. Yet, Ben didn’t know why Kevin found it so importantUnless, something happened he didn’t rememberwas he sick? Did the omnitrix do something when he used to wear it? He shook his head as he shivered again, the cold was killing him.
“Can you turn on the heat?” Ben asked and Kevin didn’t reply, only hit a button and put the car into drive. “Are you mad at me?”
Kevin turned to Ben, unbuttoning his seat belt and pushing the seat back which made him hit his head when Ben fell back (Kevin kept his foot on the brake). “owwhat did I do?!”
“You’re leavingyou said you would never leave me, you promised. And now you’re goingand you aren’t coming back”
“KevinBen sat up, I’m coming backI promi”
“No, you promised the last time, and you’re leaving. Don’t even promise me anything anymoreI can’tbelieve you” He sighed shaking his head, turning the into neutral, taking his foot off the break. He needed the heat.
“When?”
“Two years agoI tell you I love you, and you decide two years later you’re leaving.”
“Kevin”
“Do you love me Ben?”
Ben brought the car seat back up. “I doI really doeveryone is justtelling me not to, that you aren’t a good person. Or, two guys can’t be together”
“Well we candon’t leavejust, come live with meand don’t leave me.”
“I have to go to college Kevin”
“Then go somewhere else, near where I livewhere we’ll live.”
“I won’t be able to start until Fall though”
“It’ll give you time to think things over. You’ll be so stressed out if you leave nowWho knows what’ll happen. You don’t need to do what Gwen tells you to, just because she’s like a sister to you.”
“She is not.”
“She babies you, Ben. She’s more like your mom than a cousin.”
He crossed his arm and Kevin turned around in his seat, buckling his seatbelt. “Just for tonight Benwe need to talk”
—–
Ben was beginning to remember the conversation from before. This is because Kevin had taken him back to the parking garage of his building, and sat in the back seat with him. Ben’s legs pulled up to his chest as he looked at Kevin who said nothing. They needed to talk though. Kevin better have started to talk.
“Kevin” Ben started. “Why?”
“Why what?” He crossed his arms. “Do I love you?”
He shook his head no. “Why didn’t you tell me this weeks ago? That I promised you this thing? I wouldn’t have left”
“Yeah, I’m supposed to believe that?”
“What do you expect me to do then?!”
“I don’t know Ben; I just don’t want you to leave!”
Kevin shifted in his seat, pushing forward which made Ben’s eyes widen when he realized what was going on, the elder had kissed him, pushing him onto the car seat and lowering his legs.
“Bendon’t leave.” Kevin’s hands gripped against the boys black shirt, kissing him again.
“I won’t”
“No Benpromise me” He grabbed Ben’s hand, pinky to pinky.
“I promise.”
